I made a skirt this weekend for a 4-year-old little girl that prefers to wear pink and purple exclusively. She only wears comfy clothes so I opted for a simple corduroy skirt that she can easily wear with tights or her favorite purple leggings. I hand-stitched the tag because I’m still getting my kids’ line logo in order, and thought it would be cute to coordinate it with the fabric on the buttons. The fabric I used is a Robert Kaufman hot pink cotton corduroy, very thin cord so the skirt isn’t stiff at all.

Kids activity pages designed by Miranda July for Apartamento. She explains below:

Here are some kids activity pages I made for a magazine called Apartamento. Apartamento means “apartment” in the spanish language. A child living in an apartment might get bored, as children everywhere do, and might therefore need an activity to do. Please print out these pages and give them to the bored child immediately, before he gets into any more trouble.

note: this last page was not actually included in the magazine. I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and surmise that there was a space issue.

This video is up there on the awesome list — few things beat little kids break dancing and acting like grown-ups.

Tattoo Chat

First babysitting gig today: 2 year old girl asks, after spotting the tattoo on my arm for the first time in weeks:

Where you get that stamp?  Is it from magic?

Yes.

Second babysitting gig today: 5 year old boy asks (hasn’t seen me since I got it):

Tattoo?

Yes.

He silently nods, casually walks away.

Little girl’s dress I’m currently working on mass producing for boutique sales and trunk shows in April and May (with another dress as well). Dress form makes the sleeves look a little funny, but close enough.

Seamstress

I’ve recently (about 3 weeks ago) started doing seamstress work for a woman that designs children’s boutique clothing in awesome funky fabrics.  It’s an awesome opportunity to refine my sewing skills (these are for sale to the public, so I better make it good!), and she gives me total creative freedom on the design of the clothes which is awesome.  Luckily, we have very similar styles so it’s a great pairing.  However, it’s turned my life into non-stop work, because my few free moments before are now spent hunched over a sewing machine.  Luckily, I love to sew and was always looking for an excuse to sew before.  Doing seamstress work and working 1-2 days/week in an awesome fabric shop give me plenty of inspiration for making my own clothing.  When I get a little bit of free time …

A couple of (rough, phone) photos of some of the things I’ve made:

This photo was taken before the dress was hemmed, and the flower ended up a little smaller than shown.  Will post newer photos after the professional shoot we have for the spring line this weekend.

Color is a bit off - but a super cute racer-back knit tank for teeny little girls!

I’m not a huge fan of cargo shorts in general, but I made them so they’re obviously the exception.

I’ll be up all night completing some dresses.  We’ll be done this week with samples of the line and then on to full production!

Rip + Tatter

Rip + Tatter, designed by Pete Oyler, is a cardboard seat for children, designed with the ease of a use & toss attitude.  Chair getting too tattered?  Toss it out with the recycling.  No biggie.
